Unguarded Rail Crossing Leads to Collision

A 41-year-old woman was killed early Thursday morning when the car she was driving was hit by a freight train at an unguarded crossing in York County, Pennsylvania. Unguarded rail crossings are usually only marked with a sign, and are common in rural parts of the country. Trains sound their horns, have flashing lights, and use bells as they approach the intersection to alert any vehicles.

The woman, who had recently moved to York County with her husband, was on her way to her job at the time of the accident. The train was reportedly traveling at less than 50 mph when it hit the driver's side of the woman's vehicle. The car came to rest on its side 50 feet from the intersection.

Investigators will be looking at the train's black box to see what information they can glean.

At Least Six Children Killed when Train Hits School Bus in France

A school bus carrying children on a field trip in the French Alps near the Swiss border was struck by a train killing six of the children. Another 30 were injured. The accident occurred at a level crossing near the town of Allinges in the Haute-Savoire region. A level crossing is any railroad crossing intersected by a path, road, or other railroad where a bridge or tunnel is not present. They may or may not have crossing guards. The crossing in Allinges did have a crossing guard and is reported to have been working correctly.

While this accident took place in Europe, accidents involving trains and vehicles are not unique to those of us living in the U.S. Every year, many people are grievously injured or killed when the vehicle they were traveling in was hit by a train. And many of those involved in accidents of this nature were reported to have gone around the crossing guard or tried to beat the train as they crossed the road. However, there are accidents, such as this one in France, where initial details are sketchy and it is unclear what caused the crash. What is known is that the 50 children and all the adults with the exception of the bus driver were not in control of the vehicle. They were, in a sense, at the mercy of whatever the bus driver was doing. In the U.S., buses are supposed to stop at rail crossings, even if there is no train present. This helps to avoid or eliminate even the slight chance that there is a problem with crossing guards, thus allowing all passengers to get to their destination safely.

Train Derails in Chicago

A Chicago Transit Authority train derailed on Chicago's South Side today just after 10 am. Two of the four cars on the train appeared to have jumped the tracks at a junction between two lines, although it is unknown exactly what caused the derailment. CTA President Ron Huberman states that they are looking at the signal system at the junction where the train derailed. Fourteen people were taken to hospitals in either good or fair condition. Passengers on the train were worried the cars would plummet over the edge, however the cars remained upright.

This is just the latest derailment in a city whose commuter train system is almost 100 years old. The tracks run throughout the city and nearby communities on underground and elevated tracks. Last month a train derailed pulling into a station on the Chicago-Evanston border, and an electrical problem caused a train to stall in a subway one week earlier. That caused the evacuation of 100 passengers, and shut down service between downtown Chicago and O'Hare International Airport.

Two Killed by Chicago Metra Train

Two people were struck and killed Tuesday evening by a Chicago Metra train. The accident occurred on Chicago's West Side. Investigators say the two, a middle aged man and woman, were on the track. Witnesses say the train sounded its horn, but the two did not move and were struck while the train was still moving at 40 to 50 miles per hour. Both died at the scene.

Though there was protective fencing along the stretch of track where the two were killed, it was taken down several years ago. As a result, several people have been killed in this area due to hanging around the tracks. The area is rife with drugs and prostitution.

Train Accident in China Kills Dozens

At least 70 people were killed and 420 injured when two passenger trains collided in the Chinese province of Shandong early Monday morning. One train traveling from Beijing to Qingdao derailed and crashed into a train traveling from Yantai to Xuzhou.

The accident occurred at a quarter to 5:00 am local time while many of the passengers were still sleeping. However, there were some who were standing and waiting to get off at the station when the train derailed. One passenger described it as feeling as if they were on a rollercoaster. The train jumped the tracks, toppled onto its side and hit the other train.

Chinese officials believe the accident is a result of human error.

While this accident happened in China where many more people use the train than in the U.S., these things can happen here, too. People take public transportation for work or travel and expect to arrive safely. You shouldn't have to worry about injury or death.

Scores Injured in Runaway Freight Car Collision

A freight train came loose from a lumberyard and rolled onto a commuter track in Boston on Tuesday. At least 150 people, including the engineer, suffered minor injuries. The collision occurred on the main line at Canton Junction.

In the 911 tapes released, train engineer Ronald Gomes can be heard asking the dispatcher for instructions as the freight car rolled toward the commuter train. Gomes began to back the train up and was hit moments later. The impact sent him to the ground where he then radioed in an emergency.

In another tape released, an employee from the lumberyard called Stoughton police to tell them that a freight car got loose, and warned them it was on the commuter line. It took fifteen minutes for the freight car to hit the commuter train.

Eighty of the 150 passengers injured were sent to area hospitals with bruises, facial cuts, and neck and back injuries.
