An 81-year-old Florida woman did not yield while turning onto a rural highway road and struck the side of a tour bus on Monday, Feb. 22. The bus then ran off the road and rolled ejecting several people. Two people died at the scene of the bus accident and three are listed in critical condition as of this writing. Many others were seriously injured, including the driver of the bus.

Authorities say the tour bus group was made up of people from all over the US, ranging in age from 66 to 87, who were in Florida for an educational program affiliated with South Florida Community College. They were on a tour called "Discover Old Florida." They had just visited places near Lake Placid about 30 miles from Lake Okeechobee, and were headed to a nearby hotel when the accident occurred.

Police have not filed any charges against the driver yet.

Florida is notorious for its elderly drivers, as so many older people head to Florida to retire. However, elderly drivers all across the country drive when they shouldn't. Renewal of drivers licenses is either not enforced or ignored by many. It may come as no surprise that many people see their car as a necessity for errands. Imagine how serious injuries and death might decrease in this area were elderly drivers to give up their licenses when they should with the help of expanded public transportation.
