A 20-year-old in a Ford F-150 ran over a three-year-old relative in Modesto, California on Tuesday. The girl, who authorities say was the driver's sister-in-law, died later on at the hospital.

The driver told police he went outside to move his truck and saw the girl playing in the gated front yard. When he moved his truck, he said he felt a bump, and got out to see he had run over the girl.

Every year scores of children are injured and killed in front of their own home, or that of a relative, when they are run over by a vehicle in the drive way. The driver in Modesto was going no more than ten miles an hour when he ran over the three-year-old.

While there are some technologies available, or that are about to be made available, that help to keep drivers from running over what they can't see, they are often expensive to have installed. Things such as motion detectors on vehicles, cameras that show drivers their blind spots, and even beeping alerts that notify those around the vehicle they are moving can be purchased. However, most vehicles do not come with these "luxuries" and so children continue to die as a result.
