A man was saved from a burning van in November only to be killed when the ambulance transferring him from the burn center to the hospital crashed in southern South Carolina yesterday.

In early November, the 51-year-old man swerved to avoid an animal in the road. He hit an embankment and the van burst into flames. Passersby pulled him from the van, which was engulfed in flames moments later. The crash victim suffered first-, second-, and third degree burns from his legs to his shoulders.

Then, while being transferred from the burn center, the ambulance ran off the side of the road, hit a sign and a tree, then crossed the highway and hit the median. While both the driver and paramedic only suffered minor injuries, the burn victim suffered injuries to his chest.
